Landlord uses his loaf with in-house bakery and shop

The New Inn at Tholthorpe will be offering much more than beer when it opened its brand new village shop, bakery and wood-fired pizza oven this week.

Owners, Cameron and Dionne Reid have installed a village shop and bakery in the bar of their popular village pub to provide the local community with much-needed access to essential everyday items without having to travel outside the village. At the same time, they have added a wood-fired pizza oven to their main restaurant.

The shop fits neatly in to one end of the bar so that bar staff can serve both areas at the same time and it will be available during the following hours:  Tuesday to Thursday from 12-2pm and from 5.30-9pm; Friday and Saturday from 10am-2pm and from 5.30-9pm and on Sunday from 12-8pm.

This has been achieved with the support, advice and a grant of £3,500 to the overall project from Pub is The Hub.

A trained chef and experienced restaurateur, Cameron is baking fresh bread and pastries every day that are available in the shop and from the restaurant – in addition they have added a wood-fired pizza oven to their restaurant area and are offering take-away pizzas too.

Cameron said: “Tholthorpe, along with a number of villages in the surrounding area, doesn’t have a shop and locals would like to be able to shop for daily essentials without having to drive out of the village. We have been selling home-made bread over the bar but we wanted to expand into a fully-blown village shop selling our other home-made produce – chutneys, jams, cakes and biscuits – along with eggs, milk, fresh vegetables, fruit, sweets, meat and other essentials.”

So far this week, trade has been brisk. Cameron added: “The bakery has been more popular than we thought as we have sold out a few times. The shop has been busy too with people popping in and out. One local even did their weekly shop with us yesterday!”

Pub is The Hub advisor for North Yorkshire, Trisha Hughes said: “We are thrilled to have been involved with Cameron and Dionne on this project. They have shown creativity and flair in putting this project together as well as some serious commitment to their community. I hope that they are well rewarded in the support they receive from local residents.”
