North West

Pub is the Hub Adviser – Mike Clayton

Pub is the Hub has been working in the North West since 2003, and in the North West, the Rural Development Programme for England grant programmes may be able to support the development of pub-based community facilities, and are available in the following areas:

Cumbria

Cumbria County Council have recently announced the launch of CRISP 2: Cumbria Rural Infrastructure Support Programme, a new programme to support communities to help themselves to protect rural services. The programme is aimed at both social enterprises and commercial businesses that provide jobs and services in rural areas. The scheme which is jointly funded by Cumbria County Council, the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and Cumbria Community Foundation.  The Programme will be looking to support projects such as:

  • Establishing or sustaining community retail services such as village shops and post offices.
  • New and innovative community services
  • ‘Pub is the Hub’ type initiatives
  • Relocating services into existing premises
  • Community led renewable energy schemes

The Programme will be managed by the County’s two RDPE Teams; ‘Fells and Dales’ in the south, and ‘Solway, Border and Eden’ in the North. For further information and an Expression of Interest form please contact:

The Fells & Dales and Solway, Borders and Eden each will receive funding of approx £8m between 2008 and 2013. They are now developing proposals to address local priorities. The Fells & Dales programme includes parts of South Lakeland, Eden, Barrow, Copeland & Allerdale, and the Solway Border & Eden programme includes parts of Eden, Carlisle, Allerdale & Copeland.

Lancashire

There are three areas covered in Lancashire:

The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Sustainable Development Fund supports projects that bring social, environmental and economic benefits to the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).  The fund will provide grants to businesses, community groups and individuals who wish to develop and test new methods of achieving a more sustainable way of life in this area, and have the demonstrable support or involvement of communities, and bring significant benefit to the AONB area and its population.  Grants will normally be in the range of £1000 to £10,000 and the scheme can provide up to 50% funding for a project, although in exceptional cases a higher rate of grant may be provided
