01-Aug-2006 Local enterprise - Rate Relief for Village Shops

The Government's village shop rate relief scheme helps safeguard services in small isolated rural communities, where people would have difficulty finding alternatives.

That is why the 50 per cent mandatory relief is focused on the last retail outlets that provide these services.

The scheme originally provided relief for the sole village general store or post office with rateable values of £7,000 or less. It was extended to include sole village pubs and petrol stations with rateable values of £10,500 or less.

Also under the scheme any business, in a qualifying rural settlement with a rateable value of less than £14,000, can receive up to 100 per cent relief at the discretion of the Local Authority.
