The Publican - Council offers pubs £5,000 to diversify

Essex licensees get incentive to introduce extra services.

A county council is offering rural licensees grants of up to £5,000 to help them set-up vital community services in their pubs.

Essex County Council is launching its Rural Enterprise Fund tomorrow, which will offer pubs grants of 50 per cent of any capital investment, up to £5,000.

The launch will be part of the first ever Essex Village Shops and Pubs Day, which is part of an initiative aiming to improve access to services within rural Essex.

Help and advice will be given to licensees on the day by an adviser from the group Pub is the Hub.

A Pub is the Hub spokesman said he was already aware of pubs that were interested - and one that was planning to install an ATM.

John Longden, Pub is the Hub’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be working with partners in Essex to help retain and improve vital local services, helping local businesses thrive and bringing residents together via the pub as the heart and soul of the community.”
