Morning Advertiser - South Norfolk searches for best community pub
South Norfolk Council has launched a new award to find the best Community Pub of the Year
The award is part of the council's campaign to save pubs from closure. The council has already suggested relaxing the beer tie to help struggling pubs survive.
"Celebrating community pubs means we can pass on the secrets of their success," said Councillor Margaret Dewsbury.
"That draws more local people in, while getting the local more involved with its people. It will help save pubs in these difficult times and bring the community closer together."
John Hyde, licensee at the Half Moon in Rushall is backing the awards. "Local villages need their pubs more than ever now. With so many pubs closing, due to Government increases in taxes on beers and spirits, the pub is the hub of communities, and always has been.
"It is where people get a chance to meet other neighbours from their own and also from surrounding villages which have already lost their pubs."
The winner will be announced in the Autumn and will get the services of the council's tourism and leisure team to run a tailor-made event at the pub in 2010.
Pubs can be nominated at www.south-norfolk.gov.uk or text the word PUB and the name of the pub you think should win and why to 80010. Nominations must be received by 30th June 2009.
