A trade body wants pubs that provide services to their community to receive funding from a new tax on new-build properties
Under current plans, new residential and business developments — including new-build pubs — would have to pay a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) to fund local infrastructure.
The Government has set out draft regulations for the tax, which require councils to consult with local businesses and residents before deciding how much firms must pay. The amount will be based on the size of the planned development.
Although the tax is charged only on new developments, the money raised can be spent on existing infrastructure. Lobby group Business in Sport & Leisure pointed out that the draft regulations specify that CIL might be used to fund a community hall.
“We hope community elements such as those in commercial schemes like Pub is the Hub could also qualify for funding,” said executive director Andy Sutch.
The new tax will be implemented in October 2010.
