Morning Advertiser - BII boss: Pubs are socially responsible
Licensees must do all they can to reinforce the view that pubs are the most socially responsible place to enjoy alcohol.
That’s the message from BII chief executive John McNamara (pictured) to more than 1,000 trade figures at the group’s annual lunch on Tuesday.
McNamara called on members to continue their efforts to contact MPs and councillors to show the pub in a good light during the challenging trading conditions.
“All our members play a key role in their local communities.
"We represent the highest standards of social responsibility and each and every one of us directly contributes to the social fabric of our nation.
“Through its support for initiatives such as Best Bar None, the PASS proof-of-age standards scheme, Pub is the Hub and National Pubwatch — together with BII’s ground-breaking schools project, the extensive portfolio of BIIAB qualifications and the range of BII support services — we are building relationships and encouraging partnership working to the betterment of all.
“The one thing that unites us all is the great British pub.”
Keynote speaker Kevin Woodford — of GMTV and Ready Steady Cook — called for pubs to develop “interlocking elements” in their businesses.
This includes the organic movement, local sourcing, and creativity and adaptability — all helped by increased training and qualifications. Woodford added: “We need to cook from the heart and use imagination based on knowledge and acquired skills.”
