Halifax Evening Courier - Pub plan for new village
AN HISTORIC 17th century building on the former Webster's brewery site will be transformed into a village pub and community centre if Calderdale Council gives the go ahead.
The development of the grade II listed Long Can, at the entrance to the recently-built Fountain Head Village, would make it the first amenity of any kind on the new estate.
More than 50 families living in new homes there have been without a bus service, shop or post office since they started moving in more than 18 months ago.
Now, if the latest scheme is approved, the new pub could be open by the end of the summer.
Grant Stott, of Stott Thompson Architects which is working on the proposal, said: "This is part of a wider scheme to provide facilities and a social centre for the local emerging community being created at Fountain Head Village.
"Long Can will provide a social centre as well as a bar and we are confident residents will very much be behind the plans.
"It is in such a position it will be easily accessible for them to go for a drink but out of the centre so there won't be any disturbances caused by having a night time establishment there."
He added it would be based on the Pub is the Hub idea of putting pubs at the heart of local communities.
The development, which will also include a manager's flat and a 20 space car park, would leave the building almost completely unchanged both inside and out.
Four full time and six full time staff would be hired to manage the bar, which would stay open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on a weekend.
The Long Can was built in 1637 and was formerly a visitor centre for Webster's at Ovenden Wood, Halifax.
A decision is expected to be made by August 25.
