Group to measure pub community value
The IPPR (Institute for Public Policy Research), the group which wrote a report into the social value of pubs, is looking for pubs to volunteer for a scheme which will measure a pub’s community value in financial terms
IPPR plans to trial a scheme at 16 pubs across the country, and met with the BII yesterday to see if its members can get involved.
Rick Muir, author of “Pubs and Places: The social value of community pubs” (One-size fits all policy killing community pubs), which was written in conjunction with the Campaign for Real Ale, said the study will be helpful in “converting soft facts around ‘community’ into harder numbers”.
He added that this information, which could be used to rate a pub’s community value, would help present a strong case to Government about making concessions for pubs in terms of cuts in business rates.
Muir hopes to hear from the BII by next week on the decision whether or not to support the trial by suggesting members’ pubs.
The next step, according to Muir, will be for him to go and visit the pubs, and set up a survey of local residents.
