Denbighshire Visitor - Tremeirchion pub is the heart of community
A Tremeirchion landlady is making her pub a focal point for the community – which doesn’t even have a local shop
“Pubs are not just drinking holes anymore, they are places where families come for meals and where they can come with their children,” says Anna Beveridge, 44.
She has run the Salusbury Arms for nine months and has been attempting to restore the building to its former glory. Her idea for a playground became reality with the help of a UK-wide scheme known as Pub is the Hub.
He partner Martin Boardman, 59, agreed and said the new play area was very much seen as a ‘joint venture’ for the pub and the community.
He said: “We have got to create that atmosphere that makes people want to come in. It is really up to us to keep that atmosphere right and up to the community to come and use us and the playground.”
With only one other playground situated at the nearby school, it has proved a hit with families in the village, which no longer even has a local shop.
The royal rescue plan supported by Prince Charles seeks to revitalise rural pubs by helping them offer new services as well as pouring pints such as providing school meals or taking over the running of the local post office.
Helen Williams, 43, who was born and brought up in the village where she farms with her partner, Pete Bullen, regularly brings her children, Harri, seven, and Anna, four, to the pub playground.
She is very enthusiastic about its arrival and believes it provides a much needed focal point and meeting place for the residents and a safe and fun environment for the children to play. “The playground helps bring the community together,” she said.
