CAMRA What's Brewing - Extra roles for rural pubs key to a healthy community
People living in rural communities are happier and better off if their pub offers more than food and drink.
Pub is The Hub: Evaluation the Impact of Initiatives 2011 is published by the group formed 10 years ago with the backing of Prince Chares, to provide advice for keeping rural services alive.
Everyone polled said their Pub is The Hub scheme was vital to their community and most thought it allowed them to meet more people than they would have done.
Initiative Chef Executive John Longden said: “The report reveals that Pub is The Hub schemes are effective in building sustainable communities, supporting health and well-being, contributing to environmental priorities and encouraging a prosperous local economy”.
“We now have hard evidence of how good pub schemes can provide wider strategic objectives at a local and national level”.
Prince Charles recently visited the white Horse in Stourpaine, Dorset to see its new shop and post office. The shop was the idea of landlord Chris Sargent after he was asked by north Dorset District Council to open a post office. This followed the closure of the village shop some months later.
Sargent said: “To run a successful village pub I believe you need to involve the community and support their needs. Providing the shop and post office seemed like the right thing to do and I am delighted the village is supporting it”.
The Pub has also created a book swap area to act as a village library and has a popular senior citizens lunch club.
